Strata…. what is that? And how does it taste?

So, according to Wikipedia (because we all know how reliable a public-moderated encyclopedia can be), Strata is a geological formation, a comic book character, a band, a funny novel, a 3D software, two towers, and a food.  We ate the food.

Taken from Edible: A Celebration of Local Foods, this delicious savory bread pudding really captured a sense of fall foods, with hearty bread, butternut squash, dried mushrooms and tomatoes, all in a milk-egg custard.  It was delicious, a definite winner.  I have this thing for savory bread puddings, even if I have never been a fan of sweet bread puddings.  Custard soaked bread with savory bits in it.  Heaven in a baking pan.  We would eat this more often if we had bread more often, but maybe not having this every week is a good thing, it makes it that much more special.

Squash, Bread, Egg, Milk, Cheese, Mushroom, ‘Sundried Tomato’, Sage, Curry, Garlic, Onion, and Deliciousness. That is what Strata is.

The layered concoction in the oven.

Salad with Lettuce, Shredded Carrot, Daikon Radish and Parsnip, and lemon honey dressing.

Up close and personal Strata.

Harvest Pancake: Shredded Carrot, Parsnip and Apple in a whole wheat, oatmeal pancake batter. Served with Angelito from Narragansett Creamery sweetened with Maple Syrup.

Tonight we are indulging in a lovely dinner at Craigie on Main before heading off to the Ballet.  With CSAs every other week now, we have the time to do more cultural things around the city Friday night.  We’ll let you know what funky foods we eat, and how good they were.  I hope they have pig tails.
