So, here are a few meals we’ve managed to enjoy off of our local bounty.  They are only a few.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

With onion, tomato and sausage

And Green Salads

Swiss Chard and Farmstead Cheese Frittata and Toast

I will be honest.  We have been eating out quite a bit with friends who are visiting in the city.  We have managed to go to only a few places that offer local food.  The rest of the time, it has been food based upon convenience. I think it is important for us to not moralize this behavior, but to think about it.

It is interesting just how hard it is to eat locally with a group of people visiting.  I will admit it is possible.  However, the convenience of industrial food, the deterrence of bringing outside food to various venues, and the very differing tastes (and allergies) of people all culminate in the ease of just going to a restaurant.  I’m not sure if this is a new phenomenon made by and for the consumption of industrial food, but it is something to reflect upon.  I’m interested in your thoughts (do share!).

It will also be interesting next week, since we are going out of town.  We will be going to Vermont, and so there is definitely more of a chance of getting to investigate more local food.  However, how possible it is to eat locally while on vacation is another curious question that we will have to think on.

Local food will be a large part of my day today, in that I am going to be doing my Red Fire Farm CSA distribution.  I will keep you posted.

    If you really think about it industrial food and processed foods stem from convenience and ease of preparation and/or short cooking time. As we look at the huge influx of take-and-go meals in supermarkets, where we would have previously purchased only the ingredients to make the very same meal we now purchase fully prepared, it was about shortening the time of cooking but I think over the past 15-20 yrs. it has also become about people not knowing how to put together those meals. Prepared meals were created to be microwaved and eaten, as opposed to assembled and cooked. Restaurant foods I think are again about what we don’t or won’t make the time to prepare or lack the skill or finesse to prepare. Just a quick thought.
